SEL

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, students in Mr. Griffin’s 9th Grade School Orientation class dedicated an entire week to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), diving deep into themes that support personal growth, empathy, and well-being.

Throughout the week, students explored the core SEL competencies: decision-making, relationship-building, self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. Each day, they teamed up with different partners, encouraging collaboration and meaningful connections across social groups. For many, it was the first time they had truly interacted with classmates they hadn’t previously spoken to.

Activities were hands-on and interactive. Students examined real-world stories, participated in role-playing scenarios, and shared personal insights during open classroom discussions. These moments offered them the chance to connect on a deeper level, gaining perspective and empathy while also developing their own voices.

One particularly impactful activity had students write heartfelt thank-you letters to teachers throughout the school and for 'Teacher Appreciation Week.' Many expressed gratitude for the unseen emotional support teachers provide—often without recognition. Students acknowledged the way teachers believe in their potential, especially during moments when they struggle to believe in themselves.

As the week concluded, students walked away with more than just new skills. They discovered confidence, courage to speak up for others, and the ability to approach challenges in new ways. They demonstrated resilience, compassion, and a commitment to personal and communal growth.

Mr. Griffin praised the students for their openness and willingness to engage deeply with the lessons. “This week wasn’t just about learning SEL concepts—it was about living them,” he said. “The students showed that when given the tools and the space to reflect and connect, they rise to the occasion with heart and intention.”

The week’s lessons served as a powerful reminder that fostering mental health and emotional intelligence is a collective effort—one that begins with understanding, empathy, and the courage to connect.
