In Mr. Griffin’s Personal Finance/Consumer Education class, students had the opportunity to learn directly from real-world financial professionals through three guest speakers. Vanja, a Branch Manager from State Bank in Columbia, Billy, a financial advisor from Edward Jones, and Tim Stanberry, an agent representing Shelter Insurance, each brought valuable knowledge and real-life experience into the classroom.

Throughout their presentations, students were introduced to the main functions of a bank, including how savings and checking accounts work, as well as more advanced financial tools like CDs (Certificates of Deposit) and mutual funds. A major focus was placed on the importance of compound interest and why investing early can significantly increase long-term financial success. These concepts helped students understand how money can grow over time and the benefits of making smart financial decisions early in life.

The speakers also provided an “Insurance 101” overview, breaking down key terms such as premiums, deductibles, and the advantages of bundling insurance policies. Students gained a clearer understanding of how insurance protects individuals financially and how to evaluate different coverage options, including auto, home, life, and renters insurance.

To apply their learning, students participated in a round-table discussion activity. In this scenario, they worked in groups and took on the role of financial professionals, explaining insurance options to a “parent” figure. This activity required students to think critically, communicate clearly, and demonstrate their understanding of financial concepts in a real-world context. By teaching others, students were able to deepen their own knowledge while building confidence in their financial decision-making skills.
